Commenting on his selection to the team, Mayor Schundler said:
"Its an honor to be on the transition team. I think that her appointments to the team reflects the vigor this administration will pursue solutions to the state's most serious problems, especially with respect to the deteriorating infrastructure and the quality of the education system in our urban centers."
Christie Whitman's victory is thought to enhance the likelihood of passage of a host of Mayor Schundler's innovative proposals for the cities, including school vouchers, welfare reform, community policing, and the expansion of urban enterprise zones, since many of these proposals require waivers or implementing legislation to be passed by the state assembly.
"Now that we have a friend in Trenton, local officials will get the help we need and deserve. We're not just looking for more money. Many times we're just looking for the authority to help ourselves. Christie Whitman will give us that freedom. It just goes to show you -- elections do matter."
